Caregiver accused of attempting to rape elderly woman with dementia
TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a male caregiver for allegedly attempting to sexually assault an elderly woman with dementia at a group home in Taito Ward, reports Kyodo News (June 29). Between May 10 and June 11, Takahiro Torii, 50, allegedly touched the body of the woman, aged in her 70s, in a private room of the facility's shared toilet and filmed the incident. Upon his arrest on suspicion of attempted non-consensual sexual intercourse and violation of the Act on the Punishment of Filming Sexual Activity, Torii denied the former charge but admitted to filming. 'I sexually harassed her to relieve stress,' he said. According to police, about 20 videos of the woman were found on the suspect's smartphone, suggesting that she was victimized multiple times. Torii has worked as a part-time employee at the group home for about since 2014. The investigation is ongoing.

However, it has faced hurdles in its global expansion, including weaker demand and stiff competition. The company announced last year that operations at its U.S. factory would be delayed until 2028. Its India assembly plant is expected to become operational next month. "Once operational, the VinFast Ha Tinh factory will contribute to VinFast's goal of producing 1 million vehicles per year to meet the increasing demand of domestic and foreign markets," said Nguyen Viet Quang, Vingroup's CEO. The EV maker has set a delivery target of 200,000 cars for 2025, having sold approximately 56,000 units in the first five months, primarily in its domestic market.
